Summer is coming and it is time to plan holidays, short breaks and how to take some time out for many.
Recent surveys suggest the Lake District will be one of the most popular UK destinations to head for a break this summer and we don’t think there’s a better place to base yourself here than Windermere Marina Village.
And here’s the proof…Close enough to walk to the restaurants, shops and attractions of Bowness but far enough from the noise or crowds, means guests can have a relaxing and peaceful stay on this friendly but private Marina complex directly on a “secret” cove on England’s longest lake.
Windermere Marina Village have invested over £3 million into improving the décor and facilities inside their stunning Lake District self catering cottages and waterside apartments to an exceptional standard – offering guests the choice of three, four or seven day breaks and it’s easier than ever to book.
With a friendly and fully-stocked on-site Marina shop selling everything from bangers to local beers, get a room with a balcony and watch the sun go down. There are gentle walks from the site along the lakeside which are “buggyable” if with small children, and onsite there’s a sheltered cove and cooking pit for a summer’s night barbecue down by the water.
Guests can bring their own boat and see the Lake from a different perspective and the marina offer all the facilities such as electric hook-ups, advice and security.
Remember, it’s not compulsory to bring a boat here and if guests fancy getting out on the water, there are plenty of opportunities. Marina guests can choose a cruise with nearby Windermere Lake Cruises, hop on the cross-lake ferry next door to us with a bike or car, or even hire a wooden rowing boat out at Bowness Bay, just a 10-minute walk from the Lake District cottages door.
The towns of Windermere and Ambleside are just a short drive away if you prefer to get out and about but if you prefer staying closer to home, then you can. Bustling Bowness and its shops, cafes, gift shops, restaurants and attractions are literally next door.
For guests up for an adventure, then they’ve found the right place. Head a mile up the road to activity centre Lakes Leisure Windermere where couples, families and groups can try introductory lessons to canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing and sailing, or a multi-activity days with specially trained instructors. Alternatively, head to Grizedale Forest around 20 minutes away with its tree-tops Go Ape course and zip slides, a range of mountain biking trails and indoor and outdoor art exhibitions.
It all goes to make Windermere Marina Village Lake District cottages the cherished place to spend the summer. Windermere Marina Village is the Lake District’s premier Inland Marina and Windermere and Lake District self catering resort. For more information visit http://www.wmv.co.uk

A Windermere self catering & marina business has filmed a “romantic reconstruction,” for Valentine’s Day featuring the heart-warming love story of a pair of staying guests.
The couple in their early 30s, were staying at Windermere Marina Village at Bowness and had a break in the area where they took dozens of precious photos of their engagement weekend – but then lost their camera on the last day of their stay.
The couple, who had never been to the Lake District before, fell in love with the area and using their camera had documented almost every aspect of their stay – from sunset barbecues and breakfasts on their balcony, to the boyfriend springing a surprise engagement on a romantic viewpoint above Lake Windermere.
He had concealed the ring and set up a hidden camera to record the reaction of his partner to his proposal….but in the ensuing celebrations he managed to leave the precious camera behind containing all the images. Both were distraught and despite attempts to retrace their steps it was to no avail. However, the story had a happy ending when a dog walker found the camera and scrolled through the images.
Realising they had stayed at Windermere Marina Village, he handed it in at reception and it was reunited with the happy couple before they left. Staff at the Marina were so touched by their guests very own love story and the public spiritedness of the camera finder, they decided to create a “romantic reconstruction,” telling the couple’s story to promote romantic breaks in the Lakes. Just three minutes long, the short film can be seen here at http://www.wmv.co.uk/video.htm and will now be entered into awards.
Although the couple want to remain anonymous, a real-life couple from the Lake District stepped in to play their roles and stayed at the Marina – reliving their entire weekend from start to finish. The couple are played by Kendal couple Ian Wood and Rachel Heyworth. Ian is a professional photographer and Rachel a hairdresser at Daniel Gray in the town. The film was shot by Kendal-based commercial photographer and film-maker Ben Barden, while the soundtrack “Sweeter,” is by Kendal Singer songwriter Pete Lashley. The film was produced by Ellis Butcher.
Jason Dearden, of Windermere Marina Village, said: “The couple had a perfect romantic stay here in the Lakes until they lost their camera. Thankfully, because of the community spirit and kindness of people in this area, the camera was handed in.
“We were looking at how we could show what a special place the Marina is for making memories and the couple’s story was a perfect example of that. Its also a way of expressing our thanks to the person who returned their camera.

The Lakes programme was following Joe Pester who is an instructor at the Glenridding Sailing School, Joe has also run sailing classes at Inn on the Lake since he moved up to the area. When Joe decided to marry Lindi Jones, he picked the day before the Ullswater Sailing regatta and chose the Inn on the Lake as his venue. ‘The Lakes‘ programme features Gary Wilson, General Manager at the hotel and a great friend of Joes. Gary said “Joe and Lindi wanted an informal outdoor wedding so the gazebo was perfect.”

Tantallon House bed and breakfast Hadrian’s Wall are very pleased to announce winning yet another environmental award.
Following an Audit by Cumbria Rural Enterprise Agency just before Christmas and the subsequent submission of all their documentation i.e. policy, actions, system review etc, CREA has awarded Tantallon House their Gold Award. This is the highest Award achievable for the environmental programme this Hadrian’s Wall bed and breakfast are on and is the culmination of three years work. Tantallon House were awarded the Bronze in 2008 and the Silver in 2009. They have continued with many of the environmental actions such as energy monitoring and reduction, insulation to the walls, floors, roof and pipework in the cottage etc.
One notable action in 2010 was to install 5 water reducing shower heads by Eco Products. As this Hadrian’s Wall b&b monitor their energy use monthly, they found a noticeable reduction in the LPG gas usage during the summer. The actual water reduction was then tested which showed reduction of about 60% in shower water usage and this has been reflected in the energy usage.
Their analysis shows, and is supported by CREA, that Tantallon House guests numbers have increased by 4 times over the past 3 years and our energy usage has been reduced. This energy reduction that they have recorded in LPG and electricity actually equates to a reduction of 2.6 tonnes in carbon emissions, this is a reduction of 21.3% over the last 3 years. Tantallon House bed and breakfast Hadrian’s Wall are excited that this has had such a positive impact on their Cumbria Accommodation, and hope to continue this effort for the brand new Holiday Cottages Hadrian’s Wall too.

The ballroom at the George Hotel in Penrith was the stage for the first Christmas panto in over 100 years.
On Thursday 23rd December, the George Hotel Penrith saw Red Riding Hood performed to almost 100 guests. Sitting on cushions at the front of the stage were a host of young children who screamed at the wolf and laughed at Granny Hood.
Grannies, Granddads and young Mums all gave a glowing festive verdict on the performance, suggesting it was the best panto they had seen this season. Mrs Powley from Penrith brought their granddaughter and her friend, she said “It was simply fantastic. Just the right length for little ones and it was great to see the actors interacting with the audience so well. It was miles better than the one we saw in Carlisle.”
The idea of the pantomime came from General Manager Justin Wales who felt something magical was needed for little ones to celebrate the arrival of Christmas. “Mums must have taken chance to prepare for Christmas Day because there were so many grandparents at the performance. They all wanted to know if we are going to do another next year and that is a definite yes. The children all received gifts of a balloon and a decorated gingerbread man as a parting gift from the George Hotel.
Extra Infomation:
The panto performance allowed the ballroom to relive its day as a theatrical location and heart of community life in Penrith. In the 1860’s the Assembly Rooms (now the ballroom) was at the core of community activity – it played host to famous theatricals that included ‘Signor Boscow from the London Theatre.’ Since this main function room in this Penrith hotel has become home to local groups and playing host to entertainment celebrities like Lenny Henry and Vic Reeves, Bob Mortimer, Paula Yates and Jooles Holland.

Staff at a Lake District hotel are celebrating after winning a national green award at a major prize ceremony from some of the best businesses in the country.
The Langdale Hotel And Spa won the coveted “Green Hotel of the Year Award,” at the annual Hotel Catey’s – the hospitality Oscar’s, held in London held on Friday Nov 12.
Others to make the shortlist, included the capital’s famous Marriott Hotel in Marble Arch; Jury’s Inn, Liverpool; The Park Royal Hotel in Warrington, and the Premier Moor Hotel and Spa in Sutton Coldfield. But it was the work of The Langdale Hotel and Spa which most impressed judges.
It crowns a successful year for the 35-acre Langdale Estate, which runs a luxury Lake District 4 star hotel and spa, timeshare and over 100 self-catering lodges based in the spectacular ruggedness of Langdale Valley near Ambleside.
As well as having large-scale recycling schemes for its thousands of annual visitors and low energy lighting systems, its approach to the environment doesn’t stop there with home working policies for staff reducing the need for car journeys, biodiversity plans, visitor payback and other schemes to minimise and reduce the impact of the hotel’s activities.
It’s also a goal of the company to have a long-term commitment to sustainable tourism and to be an ethical employer.
Just over a year ago, the hotel introduced a ground-breaking high-tech boiler which is fuelled by woodchip. The system means millions of gallons of water used annually by the guests, spa users, restaurants, swimming pool is heated environmentally and using a clean, efficient and renewable energy source – reducing the hotel’s dependency on liquid propane gas
In 2009 the Estate won the Sustainable Hotel prize at the annual Cumbria Tourism Awards and prides itself on its commitment to all things green and encouraging environmental practices among its guests.
There are just 16 awards given out at the Hotel Catey’s, which were launched in 2007 and are recognised as the hotel industry’s only truly independent benchmark of operational excellence.
Nick Lancaster, Director of Resort Operations of Langdale Hotel and Spa, said: “It is the people at Langdale that make the difference. All decisions and actions which are “green” and “sustainable” are also considered for their commercial benefit and we do not do things just because they are green but always make business decisions on a commercial and sustainable business logic.”
Joe Longmuir, Managing Director of Langdale 4 star Hotel and Spa, said: “The whole team at Langdale are delighted to receive this prestigious award. Sustainability and a green ethos is part of our company DNA at Langdale and all business decisions consider the impact on the environment, along with the commercial benefit to the business. Langdale is proof that you can be green and successful.”
Ian Stephens, Chief Executive of Cumbria Tourism, commented: “This is a significant result for the area and we send our congratulations to the Langdale Hotel and Spa. The Lake District must lead the way in green tourism and it is businesses like this that raise the bar for the industry here.”

A performance of the Nutcracker ballet and a fairytale afternoon tea heralded the arrival of Christmas at the Lodore Falls Hotel on Sunday (21st Nov). The hotel, which has taken the Nutcracker theme this year was packed guests wanting to see the first ever ‘Lodore’ ballet production.
Over 170 guests saw dancers from the Starkey School of Theatre Dance in Whitehaven, perform a short version of the Nutcracker Ballet. Aged 9 – 24 the dancers put on a performance that was truly professional and there was hardly a dry eye in the house as parents, grandparents and regular customers were captivated as they watched and listened to the story unfold.
With numerous costume changes and a cast of 30, the enormous amount of preparation was clearly evident and pure enjoyment was plain to see on the faces of the dancers.
Guests were very impressed at the attention to detail given to the hotel décor, the ballet production and the themed link to the afternoon tea with chocolate mice and snow cakes. Mrs Sheila Bewsher from Whitehaven watched Grandson Thomas take part, she said “the hotel looks fantastic with tutu’s masks and ballet shoes; it set the scene for the ballet. It couldn’t have been a more perfect start to Christmas.”
Joyce Hill from Brampton said “it was an enchanting afternoon, something different and a wonderful way to enjoy afternoon tea. The ballet was lovely and the food was fabulous.”
Karen Starkey, Director of the production said “it has been a wonderful experience to create a ballet in such lovely surroundings – it is the perfect location for this Christmas fairytale. The dancers have loved every minute and really appreciated the opportunity to put on the show. The hotel was great to work with and we are already talking about what we can do next.”
Stephen Johnson, General Manager of the Lodore Falls part of the Lake District Hotels Ltd Group said “It was lovely to get such fantastic comments from our regular guests as well as seeing new people experience the magic of our hotel for the first time.”
The idea to create a real first in Cumbria with a Nutcracker theme came from Kit Graves, Lake District Hotels Ltd Director, who saw a stunning Nutcracker display in Denmark’s ‘Royal Copenhagen Flagship store’ last Christmas. Work started on the 2010 Christmas Nutcracker story very early in the year and has culminated in a fantastic Nutcracker Christmas display. Not to be out done, Head Chef Mike Ward has also created a menu of Russian inspired dishes including Borscht (Beetroot Soup) Kiev’s and Sugar Plum Fairy cake. There are also Russian Cocktails too, like the Ballet Russe, the Moscow Mule and the Russian Quaalude.
The next Russian inspired event at the Lodore Hotel Lake District is a Luncheon on 2nd December – tickets £30. For more details visit http://www.lakedistricthotels.net/lodorefalls/index.php
Lake House is the latest venture for Gilpin Lodge, the award winning family owned and run hotel in Windermere.
Since opening in September 2010, Lake House has already proved a resounding success with guests who have been blown away with one couple’s comments being “it’s like a decompression chamber for stress – you simply feel your body relax”.
Lake House is comprised of six individual suites sharing this fully staffed boutique hotel with bar, dining room, lounge, swimming pool, sauna, hot tub and Knipe Tarn, a four acre right outside the door. The attention to detail is second to none at Lake House but its uniqueness is the combination of their unfussy service which creates an experience of escapism rarely found these days. Quiet, untouched, and devoid of traffic or people, whether sitting by the fire in the lounge, or in the cedar wood hot tub, Champagne in hand, or in the swimming pool, the view instils a sense of peace and calm.
The Lake House is set in 100 acres of private grounds. From the east side of the Lake, over the dam and the waterfall, a stile leads you into the grounds which are a mixture of hilly woodland, moorland, grassland and wild ponds. Approximately half and hour’s walk from the main house, one particular hill has been named “Viewpoint”. From here you have 360 degree panoramic views of the Lake District, including the distant mountain ranges of Coniston and the Langdales. From this vantage point wild deer and birds of prey are frequently seen. Quite simply a unique location, setting it apart from other Windermere hotels.
The family and team are very proud to have been voted best small hotel in the national tourism awards held by Visit England in April 2010. This follows winning the Cumbria Tourism awards in April 2009, and the North-West England Tourism awards in November 2009.

Eden Ostrich World is pleased to announce their festive themed programme of events to occupy even the most excited child this Christmas.
When visiting Eden Ostrich World over the festive period families will be able to experience Christmas themed areas and activities including a craft table where visitors can make a Christmas mask or perhaps colour in a picture and they can even make a Christmas decoration to be displayed on the Eden Ostrich World tree.
The Christmas themed program of events will take place on the 4th, 5th, 11th, 12th, 18th, 19th, 22nd and 23rd of December and is the perfect way to start the Christmas holidays, both young and old!
Eden Ostrich World is a family run business hosting a working farm and visitors centre, which opened to the public in 1998. Diversification came about due to the dramatic changes within the agricultural industry: as it became more difficult to survive whilst farming new ideas started to emerge and after several years planning we created and opened our doors to the public as Eden Ostrich World.
Situated in the middle of the Eden Valley, we couldn’t ask for a more magnificent setting, with the River Eden running straight through our site, it allows customers to take in the views and have a wander down by the river! It is classed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the different varieties of birds and wildlife.
Their aim is to offer bags of fun and Lake District things to do as well as an educational day, not only learning about the ostrich, from incubation and hatching through to being fully grown, but to give people an insight into modern day farming. They also host playgrounds, a tea room and a very reasonable gift shop, as well as the Hayloft Gallery which is packed full of unusual gifts – Lake District attractions experiences for the whole family.

For the first time ever, the Lodore Falls Hotel in the Borrowdale Valley will have a very unique theme for Christmas.
The Lodore Falls Hotel on the edge of Derwentwater will be filled with decorations depicting the Nutcracker Ballet -– complete with tutu’s and pink ballet shoes hanging from the ceiling. What’s more the Lodore will also be creating Russian inspired dishes for the menu and a gala afternoon tea with a performance of the Nutcracker Ballet.
The idea to create a real first in Cumbria came from Kit Graves, Director of the Lake District Hotels Ltd group, who saw a stunning Nutcracker display in one of Denmark’s most famous stores last Christmas. Work started on the 2010 Christmas Nutcracker story very early in January and hotel florist Tricia Irving has been sourcing inspirational ways to decorate the hotel ever since.
Decorating the hotel will start in early November and will be completed by 14th November, ready for launch of the Lodore Falls Christmas menu on the 15th November and the afternoon tea with an edited performance of the Nutcracker Ballet on Sunday 21st November.
The hotel contacted Karen Starkey who runs the Karen Starkey Dance School in Whitehaven early this spring. Karen enthusiastically agreed to some of her pupils performing a short version of the Nutcracker during the festive period and was especially thrilled because one of her pupils – Lewis Charlton, is performing in the Nutcracker at the Royal Ballet School.
Earlier this week Tricia and Karen got together to look at costumes and consider how to blend floral and ballet accessories with Christmas décor. The ballet pupils have now been selected and the 20 + team of performers are now rehearsing for the event. The performers range from age 9 to 24 with several of the ballerinas performing point work.
Tickets for the Nutcracker Ballet and afternoon tea cost £15 adult, £7.50 child (family ticket 2 adult 2 children £40). Other Nutcracker themes include Russian inspired dishes on the bar menu, a special Cumbria Life luncheon on 2nd December and music on selected Sundays during lunch.

Purchased in 1971 by the present owners John and Marjorie Sodeau, the house was then called Hoggs Hill Close and was a six bedroom private residence from which a small private hotel in Windermere was born. The house was very different then, with a stable block in the area to the rear of the building and a tennis court at the front. In 1980 the swimming pool extension was added and an additional 18 bedrooms were created. Additional bedrooms were added and the dining room extended in 1995, a plaque can be found on the wall below the terrace. The house next door, 6 Thornhill, was purchased and a new gravel track added in front of the hotel to provide access and a further 6 bedrooms were created. In 2008 these rooms were refurbished and we now have 4 bedrooms in the lodge/annex, with 2 having sitting rooms with lovely lake and mountain views.
Offer subject to availability and cannot be used in conjunction with other offers. Usual terms and conditions apply. Superior rooms subject to availability and a supplement. Limited number of rooms available on this offer. Offer available until 12th December 2010, but certain dates excluded. Minimum stay 2 nights. Cannot be combined with any other offer. After a competition to find a new name for the George Hotel’s refurbished bar, the name is revealed this week as DAPPERS BAR.
The name DAPPERS BAR was chosen from over 270 entries ranging from the very traditional to the very modern and quirky. John Fisk from Shap entered the winning name. He thought the many sided 400 year old history of the hotel could tie in to the new look and feel of the new bar.
The hotel was a buzz during the 1700’s, Bonnie Prince Charlie came to stay and King George II was on the throne. Noted for being smart and well dressed in his fine clothing, King George II was nick named Dapper King George. Now the bar is modern and distinctive, it too feels like a dapper place to be.
Justin Wales, General Manager at the George Hotel part of the Lake District Hotels Ltd Group said “Finding a name has been very difficult because there were so many to choose from and everyone has a different idea what it should be. John was really pleased when we told him that we had decided on Dapper’s Bar because of the link to King George II. He reigned during an important part of the hotel’s history and it was his forebears that the George Hotel was named after.”
John and his wife Sue called in to the bar this week to collect their £60 dinner vouchers and were impressed with the welcoming ambiance, comfy sofas and the fine detail like the gold leaf light fittings. They also shared some of their research on the dapper king and his life with Justin who has already commissioned a special plaque to commemorate the new name. It is being crafted to sit at the entrance of the bar and will recount the famous words that Queen Caroline allegedly uttered about King George II: “You may strut, dapper George, but ’twill all be in vain, We all know ’tis Queen Caroline, not you, that reign.”
As well as refurbishing the bar, the Lake District Hotels Ltd Group have also made improvements to the rear entrance with the entrance dressed in a new coat of paint and a new barrier entrance to control the car park. It means guests will have much easier access to car park and a pleasant entrance to the rear of this Penrith Lake District hotel.
Now open daily from 11am, the Dapper’s Bar is enjoying increased popularity, attracting new diners at lunchtime and early evening guests looking to try the cocktails and sample the new tapas menu. Visit http://www.lakedistricthotels.net/georgehotel/index.php for more information.

The newly refurbished bar in Penrith’s George Hotel opened for business last weekend.
A launch event was held for local businesses. The specially arranged evening gave people first chance to see the contemporary new look of the bar and to come up with ideas for a new name.
The old “Oak Bar” was completely stripped and transformed into a light bright and welcoming space. A full team of local trades people undertook the challenge and gave the bar an exceptionally high quality finish for local people to enjoy. The furnishings are comfortable yet modern with burgundy and lime chairs, cosy sofas and ‘gold leaf’ shades and lamps creating a much more welcoming ambience.
Guests at last week’s event were treated to Bellini cocktails, champagne and tapas canapés – to introduce the new menus which now include tapas and cocktails.
The verdict from everyone was unanimous – ‘a fantastic new look, up to date, welcoming and exactly right for Penrith’. Regulars commented that it was nice to see the place buzzing, describing the transformation as “absolutely brilliant”.
Justin Wales, General Manager at the George Hotel said “It was good to have so many local businesses supporting the event. For example, John and Sandra Siddle brought their team from the Sands Gift Shop and helped create a real party atmosphere and the team from Dodd & Co put our cocktail menu through its paces – we look forward to welcoming them back now they know what we have to offer. The bar is certainly attracting a new audience and we are pleased to see a really good age mix coming in to see how things have changed.”
Now open all day from 11am, the new look has enticed new customers and introducing a tapas menu has encouraged more people to try something different. Justin said “the bruchetta with goat’s cheese became an instant success, beating some of our best selling bar meals in the first week. Customers are also trying the new cocktail menu, trying the full range that we have on offer – including our non alcoholic cocktails.”
As part of the opening activity and to attract new people to this Penrith hotels bar, Justin has been running a competition in the Herald to re-name the bar. So far, over 100 different names have been put forward, but the favourites remain a closely guarded secret until entries close this weekend (24th July). The winner will be announced next week.
Anyone who has not yet seen the new bar should call in and take a fresh look.
